What if it rains: Destin Family Photographer cover tips for rain back up

Imagine you have planned a family beach session in Destin, Florida, for months. You have hired a professional photographer, chosen outfits, and coordinated schedules with family members who live in different states or countries. You have imagined the beautiful photos of your family enjoying the sun, sand, and sea on display in your home. But what if it rains on the day of my Destin Family Photographer session?

What do you do?

First of all, don't panic. Rain happens almost every day here in Destin during the summer months-but only for a short time. In fact, some of the most memorable and unique family beach photos can be taken after a storm. While sunny days are great for soaking up that sun, they cause harsh shadows on peoples faces, cloudy days offer a softer light that can evoke connection, playfulness, and emotion.

You can also use umbrellas, raincoats, and boots to add a fun and practical element to your photos. Think of it as a chance to showcase your family's adaptability and resilience.

Next, be ready with a back up plan. Very rarely do we need to actually reschedule a photo session because the rain will be gone by sunset leaving us with a beautiful beach sky for family photos. However, we always leave back up dates on our calendar just in case. When you book your session with us, we will discuss back your backup plan.

In a last effort to capture your family in Destin if it will be raining AT the time of your session, think about doing a park or garden session late morning or mid-day when it's not raining. While you may have envisioned a sunny and picturesque beach session, remember that lush greenery, palm trees and Florida gardens can also have their own beauty and charm. Don't focus too much on perfection or ideal conditions. Instead, embrace the moment and enjoy the time with your family, rain or shine. After all, the purpose of the beach session is not only to create stunning photos but also to capture the essence of your family's relationships, personalities, and stories.

We found a stunning park by the beach in Destin to take some family photos before heading to the beach. The lush greenery and Palm Trees made for a stunning backdrop. While the rain had passed and we had lots of sun, we also had lots of wind. You will hear me say repeated, it's always windy on the beach... but this particular day, it was even windy (and cold) for me on the beach. The family rocked it and posed with smiles on their faces, clearly enjoying each other’s company despite the wind and cooler temps..

After a few shots at the park, they headed to the beach. The family was eager to create some beautiful photos against the backdrop of the Gulf of Mexico. The famed white sand beaches of Destin, FL made for an exquisite setting, with the turquoise water and palm trees adding to the tropical vibe.

Once again, the family’s joy and laughter shone through, making for some beautiful candid moments. They played in the sand, took a dip in the water, and even posed on some nearby rocks for a few dramatic shots.

Despite the rain reschedule for their photo session, this family was able to create beautiful memories in one of the most picturesque destinations in the US. The park and beach of Destin, FL never disappoint, making it the perfect location for a family photo shoot. Don’t let a little rain stop you from enjoying all that this stunning city has to offer.

What's the best weather for family portraits? Cloudy or sunny?

If you're planning to have a portrait session done, there are many factors you need to consider to make sure you get the best possible outcome. One important aspect is the weather conditions during the shoot. While many people might prefer a bright and sunny day for their photography, I argue that an overcast day is actually better for a portrait session for several reasons.

Firstly, an overcast day provides much softer lighting conditions. Bright sun can create unflattering shadows and harsh highlights on the skin, which can be difficult to fix during post-processing. On the other hand, an overcast day provides diffused light that is far gentler on your subject, allowing you to capture more even and natural-looking skin tones. You won't have to worry about harsh shadows or overexposed highlights making your photos look unbalanced or unprofessional.

Moreover, an overcast day provides more consistent lighting conditions throughout the day. On a sunny day, lighting can change dramatically throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. This can be problematic for portrait shoots since it is essential to have consistent lighting throughout the shoot for a unified style. In contrast, on an overcast day, you can shoot for more extended periods without worrying about lighting changes significantly mid-session.

Another benefit of overcast weather is that your subject will be more comfortable. On a hot and bright sunny day, your subject may get sweaty and uncomfortable, which can lead to a less than desirable expression. On an overcast day, however, the temperature will likely be more comfortable, and you'll be able to shoot for longer without your subject getting distracted by the heat.

Finally, if you're shooting outdoors, an overcast day provides a neutral, non-distracting background. There are no harsh shadows from objects, and the background is less likely to be overexposed. This makes it easier for your subject to stand out in the photo and for the image to appear more professional.

Overall, while bright, sunny days might seem like a perfect backdrop for a photoshoot, an overcast day can actually provide much better lighting and more consistent photography conditions. Your subject will be more comfortable, the lighting conditions will be more even and flattering, and your images will likely turn out more professional-looking. So don't be discouraged by cloudy skies during a photoshoot – they might just be the perfect backdrop you were looking for.
