Whether it is a framed print, a canvas print, or artisan metal print, any photographer will tell you that adding family wall art to your home decor will enhance your room with happiness and harmony. However, the task of determining the proper size and placement of family wall art collections can sometimes seem daunting. As an artist creating custom wall art collections for clients, I want to help with the most frequently asked question: "What size prints should I choose for my wall?". Here's my top 3 tips on how to decide what size of wall art will be just right for your room, to help make the selection process a little bit easier, and more importantly fun!

Here are things to consider when deciding what size artwork to buy:

The Room - When picking wall art for any room BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER! My clients love that I can help them decorate their home with the perfect size art. The biggest issue clients run into is not knowing how the image will look on their wall. Because of this, people tend to choose wall art that is much too small for the room! If you are investing in art, you certainly don't want to purchase it, and hang it, only to discover your room still feels bare. Evaluate the room, if the furniture is sparse, then a large piece of artwork will fill up the visual field as furniture might. Think about your ceilings are they high, voluminous, vaulted ceilings allowing for a 60x40 image, or low -where a smaller print size, like 24x30 might work best? Just remember - to be on the safe side, GO BIG! This is especially true if wanting show off the sky and the beach, bigger is definitely better to maximize the statement.

The Wall - Well, of course, you will consider the wall size, and even measure it once or twice, but then what? You need to think about two things here - of course there is the overall dimensions of the wall, but then you also need to think about the orientation. This is where we shine! Send us a photo of YOUR wall and we can help choose the best sizes! Tall, narrow walls (foyers, bathrooms, vestibules) will work best with wall art of a similar shape, created in a portrait, or vertical orientation, while horizontal wall spaces (often found over sofas, bedrooms, or in a hallway) work best with landscape-oriented artwork. In looking at the overall wall space dimensions your artwork should take up two-thirds to three-fourths of the wall. Like I stated above ~ go big!

Over Furniture or Mantels - Many of my portrait clients who ask for my help in creating wall art for their home send me photos of the wall where they intend to hang the images. As I said earlier, this is great idea! Along with the measurements they provide me, I can easily create a few wall art collection samples for hanging. However, I sometimes receive pictures from customers of my images hung in their homes, and I wish they would have consulted me on size selection prior to purchasing, because the beautiful 24x30 Canvas they just invested in looks lost over their 8 foot couch. Here is the rule of thumb when hanging over furniture like a sofa, table, fireplace mantle, etc.: The art should be three-fourths the width of the furniture and hung 6"-12" above the top. It is that easy! Our clients love that they can send us a photo of their wall so we can create some samples for them to choose from!
