Preparing your husband for your family portraits | Sundestin Beach Resort | 30A Photographer

Updated: Feb 11, 2023

In typical Melonie Marie fashion…here is an over-share of a family portrait session at Sundestin Beach Resort in Destin, FL.. I can’t help it. I love capturing every smile and giggle, and sometimes I don’ t know when to stop. The colors this family chose for their outfits were perfect for a May sunset here on 30A Florida! We had lots of laughs and plenty of jokes with the boys. It was such an honor to capture these vacation memories for the O'B Family.

And also in typical Melonie Marie fashion... Instead of just sharing pretty pictures, I'm also going to share some valuable tips for preparing for a family photo session. Today's Hot Topic :#grumpyhusbands

well, maybe not grumpy, but one that's less than excited about the photo shoot. LOL

Tips for emotionally preparing your husband for your Family Portrait Session:

GREAT FATHERS DAY GIFTS | DADDY & HIS BOYS | Family Photo Session

Mr O'B was the perfect 'dad' model for this blog post as he was not-only excited about the session, it was him and I who actually picked out the final wardrobe. We had the same thoughts on color harmony and after Mrs O'B saw the images, she agreed that we both had the perfect vision!

Unfortunately, for some wives, preparing the husband for the family photo session is as exhausting as preparing the kiddos. If you hubby is happy-fo-lucky about photo day, that's excellent! If you're dealing with someones who's a little reluctant however, then keep scrolling to view some tips hat can you do to help!

Family Portraits Tip 1: What to expect at Session

Especially if this is your first session together with the family now that the kids are mobile, let him know how the session will go and discuss your expectations. Let him know the different poses you plan to capture and what he will need to be involved with. Also, if you have to bribe the kids, communicate this with him so he can help remind them of the briber and encourage the excitement.

Family Portraits Tip 2: What should dad wear

Keep him comfortable! We will be on the beach, let him dress in wardrobe that will allow him to bend, sit, squat and even splash in the water. We will be mobile (up, down, walking, etc). Make sure he is aware that he will be in these positions and that he is something that allows for comfort.

Note: we understand that not everyone has the mobility to allow for sitting/bending poses for the family session, however, if you are capable, this does allow additional options for your beach session.

Family Portrait Tips 3: Warn dad about excitement level

Warn him that the kids will probably be crazy or freak out and that he should prepare himself for that. Let him know that it will still be fine and to try not to get overwhelmed or worried. Many times when the kids (even teenagers) see that ocean, they just go running! It's ok that the kids might be a little excited, the beach is full of energy and fun!

Family Portrait Tips 4: Dad and the kids

Let him know that the more helpful he is in getting himself and the kids ready, the less stressed you will be and the less chance of an argument between you arising. Remind him that the session is less than an hour and that it's actually some fun memories being made with the kids during that hour. It's not just pose and smile, we get to interact, joke around and connect.

Is your hubby interested in shoreline fishing or some other cool 'husband' activity here 30A.? Tell him we are the perfect resource for tips on that subject. My husband loves to share his local 30A tips for the best beer, food, fishing, kayaking, and more! Many times after the session is over, I need to let the "guys" know that it's time stop chatting and it's time to head home LOL.

Family Portrait Tips 5: Bribe Him

If your husband is being difficult, bribe him to cooperate during the session as well. If it works for the kiddos, it may very well work for him! And Most importantly, remind him that you love him (and that he loves you, and that’s why he’s cooperating with this). Tell him how much you appreciate his support and cooperation in this, and how pleased you are going to be with the finished photos.
